A quick look at Data Storage options

Posted on November 19th, 2013

Let’s face it, no-one wants to back up their data. But, due to that small chance of data failure

we adhere and comply to a back up solution to nullify the risk and enable us to recover our precious and invaluable data.

So, what do you choose in an ever changing, ever growing , even more confusing world of new technologies. All companies must consider what the best back up strategy they must employ for there data retention. There is a solution for all budgets, just ensure they preform to your specific needs.

Note : You should stay away from home user solutions for your business.

Let’s take a look at what is available :

LTO 6 Tape DrivesTape Storage

A popular method of storing data, is used more for archiving nowadays  than  back up. A great fit when using it in conjunction with another on site  storage application.

It benefits from low costs, reliability and a proven lifespan of 30 years.

The main consideration would be that this is generally for cold data and when quick access to your data is not crucial.

Current options include :

LTO Media, now in it’s 6th generation, has a  2.5TB+ capacity with a performance of up to 400mb/s.  Options from full tape automation or single drives to run the media.  Secured with AES 256-bit encryption and easy to install software.

Direct Attached Storage (DAS)

Combing the benefits of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and tape storage. The  RDX removable disk storage system offers a cost efficient, reliable and  convenient storage for backup, archive, data interchange and disaster  recovery.

Easy to use, easy to store off site by just removing the rugged cartridge. Which also entails it’s ease of expansion. Once capacity is reached you just replace with another cartridge. Initial costs are low so good for smaller businesses with little data growth.

Current options include :

Options of 8 slot drives to single stations. Capacity ranging from 320GB to 1.5TB, all fully interchangeable whatever RDX system/drive is used. Transfer rates of up to 200MB/s.

Drobo Disk StorageNetwork Storage Solutions (NAS)

Becoming more cost effective, NAS is not just for the big boys anymore. It’s biggest appeal being able to offer real time back up and recovery. With it also connected to your network, remote access to key files is possible.

Fast and easy deployment of 3TB to 20TB of expandable, fault-tolerant storage. With RAID technology you can mirror data across drives to further minimize risks incase of disk failure.

Perfect solution if you have a small, flexible workforce and saving and obtaining your data quickly is more suitable than a manual method.

Other options include Internal/External Hard drives :

If you do not need to connect your data sets to the network then you may also want to consider just a Hard Drive to keep costs down. These are more basic compared to an ‘intelligent’ NAS system but not everyone needs all the bells and whistles. Small, robust, easy to use Hard drives now have a capacity of 4TB (Internal drives also available)

If your business is data expanding then the other options above are more relevant.

I hope this clears up some understanding of what is available in the market and you are able to choose your Data back up solution that fulfills your requirements.
